If you are currently located in the United States, the below link can be a helpful resource in making sure you are prepared with all the travel documentation you need, getting a passport or renewing your passport, if need be. There are options for renewing in person or by mail. The process of getting a new passport can take as long as 8 weeks, there are ways to speed up this process but you will be paying a much more expensive rate.
